Welcome to Finland!

In 2027, the International Conference on Philosophical Practice will be held 10-12 June in Helsinki, the capital of Finland

The
ICPP is a global movement of philosophical practitioners, which convenes regularly at international conferences. The ICPP community is entirely self-governing, on the basis of collegiality and goodwill. The ICPP's mission is to further the growth and development of philosophy as a practice. It has no political structure, and no ideology. Its purpose is to share insights, experiences and initiatives on all aspects of philosophical practice.

Since 1994, International Conferences on Philosophical Practice have been held in different countries of the world. Countries such as Canada (1994), the Netherlands (1996, 2010), USA (1997), Germany (1998), United Kingdom (1999), Norway (2001), Denmark (2004), Spain (2006), Italy (2008), South Korea (2012), Greece (2013), Serbia (2014), Switzerland (2016), Mexico (2018), Russia (2021), Romania (2023), Croatia (2025) hosted these conferences. For additional details, please visit: https://icpp.site/.

Theme of the conference:

Philosophical Practice in Society and
Practitioners as Activists

One of the ideals of activism is that we are not bystanders in the flow of life. We actively create and maintain the flow and are created by that flow - through our choices, practices, preferences, aesthetics, thoughts, participations, entanglements – just to name a few – and we have the power to change society if needed. What is the role of philosophy in societal change? Philosophical practitioners often do not take an active view into this.

Our main question thus is, can philosophical practice be or become part of activism? If so, what kind of activism could it be? What kinds of questions and practices within the field need to be asked and practiced? Are we as philosophical practitioners ready for more active roles?

Activism is not a new idea in Philosophical Practice. If we look at how (now) well known practitioners such as Gerd Achenbach, Lou Marinoff, Ran Lahav, Ora Gruengard,  Schlomit C. Shuster, Lydia Amir, and many, many others, paved the way for us to discuss and practice philosophy in a way that gave new life to old wisdom, we can appreciate the work done - even amidst opposition and critique.

However, we are now faced with new issues, challenges, and a need for another leap for philosophical practice. How are we useful in the times to come? Why is philosophical practice important? What areas of research and practice do we need to (re-)enter? Can - or should - philosophical practice be more involved in community and society building? What actions of radical hope are called for?

June is the start of the short, yet beautiful Finnish summer. You may expect sunshine and pleasant temperatures during the day, although occasional rain showers can occur, especially after midsummer. In June, you'll be able to experience the best of the midnight sun as around summer solstice the sun hardly sets.

The average temperature in June 2021:

Helsinki 19.3°C / 66.7°F

Yes you can. The water quality in Finland and in the Helsinki metropolitan area is high. Most of the raw water for the Helsinki metropolitan area comes from Lake Päijänne by a tunnel running over a distance of more than 120 kilometres.

The airport is best reached by train I or P, and the journey takes half an hour. Tickets can be purchased from vending machines, R-kiosks or the HSL app. Bus 600 also goes to the airport, but the ride takes almost an hour.

You can easily buy a ticket using the HSL app or contactless payment (or from a ticket machine). More information on different types of tickets > >
